On a Class of O(n2) Problems in Computational Geometry

چکیده
There are many problems in computational geometry for which the best know algorithms take time 19(n 2) (or more) in the worst case while only very low lower bounds are known. In this paper we describe a large class of problems for which we prove that they are all at least as difficult as the following base problem 3SUM: Given a set S of n integers, are there three elements of S that sum up to 0. We call such problems 3StJM-hard. The best known algorithm for the base problem takes ~9(n 2) time. The class of 3SuM-hard problems includes problems like: Given a set of lines in the plane, are there three that meet in a point?; or: Given a set of triangles in the plane, does their union have a hole? Also certain visibility and motion planning problems are shown to be in the class. Although this does not prove a lower bound for these problems, there is no hope of obtaining o(n 2) solutions for them unless we can improve the solution for the base problem.

Sweep Line Algorithm for Convex Hull Revisited
Convex hull of some given points is the intersection of all convex sets containing them. It is used as primary structure in many other problems in computational geometry and other areas like image processing, model identification, geographical data systems, and triangular computation of a set of points and so on. Computing the convex hull of a set of point is one of the most fundamental and imp...
متن کاملA numerical technique for solving a class of 2D variational problems using Legendre spectral method
An effective numerical method based on Legendre polynomials is proposed for the solution of a class of variational problems with suitable boundary conditions. The Ritz spectral method is used for finding the approximate solution of the problem. By utilizing the Ritz method, the given nonlinear variational problem reduces to the problem of solving a system of algebraic equations. The advantage o...

متن کاملOn Levels in Arrangements of Curves, II: A Simple Inequality and Its Consequences
We give a surprisingly short proof that in any planar arrangement of n curves where each pair intersects at most a fixed number (s) of times, the k-level has subquadratic (O(n2 1 2s )) complexity. This answers one of the main open problems from the author’s previous paper (FOCS’00), which provided a weaker bound for a restricted class of curves (graphs of degree-s polynomials) only. When combin...

We prove a general lemma on the existence of (1/r)-cuttings of geometric objects in Ed that satisfy certain properties. We use this lemma to construct (1/r)-cuttings of small size for arrangements of line segments in the plane and arrangements of triangles in 3-space; for line segments in the plane we obtain a cutting of size O(r+Ar2/n2), and for triangles in 3-space our cutting has size O(r2+ε...
